Sanctity of Human Life
This week, churches throughout America will commemorate Sanctity of Human Life Sunday…a celebration of the value of human life. This value of life is established in the first chapter of the Bible when God created man in His own image. The Psalmist David affirms the value of human life in Psalm 139, where he declares to God:
You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well!
We instinctively recognize the unique value of human life every time we observe a newborn baby—each part “knitted together” in his mother’s womb under the watchful eye of God! This conviction of the dignity of human life governs issues such as abortion, euthanasia, suicide, life support, genetic engineering, and embryo technology. God calls us to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…defend the rights of the poor and needy." (Proverbs 31:8-9) It’s critical that we think biblically about these issues and bring God’s perspective to our prayers, interactions, and voting.
We celebrate the Sanctity of Human Life not as a political statement but as an affirmation that from conception we are made in the image of God and that infuses all of life with purpose and dignity. Let's give thanks to God for the indescribable gift of life!
