  1. How would you define the church in your own words? How does Jesus define the church in Matthew 16?

  2. What is our ultimate identity as the people of God? Are other aspects of our God-given identity just as real? 

  3. What symptoms would you expect to observe in a church where people’s sense of identity is rooted in what is not ultimate? Do you observe any of them in your own life?

  4. Do you think of authority as a good or bad thing? Is your perception and experience of spiritual authority more positive or negative? 

  5. What has God given the church authority to do? Why is our authority essential to fulfilling our mission?

  6. How is church discipline an expression of God’s redemptive love?
